What is dye-sublimation polyester used for?

Dye-sublimation polyester is a printed fabric where the ink is set into the fibres, which gives sharp colour and a smooth finish. It suits backdrops, exhibition graphics and indoor displays where the image is viewed up close.

Because the print sits in the fabric, it holds its colour well when it is folded, rolled and stored between events.

When should you choose blockout fabric?

Blockout fabric stops light passing through, so a banner printed on it does not show the wall or lighting behind. It suits a single-sided banner where the back should look clean.

If you need the banner to be seen from both sides, a double-sided print or a different fabric may suit better. Ask for a sample if the use is unclear.

What is mesh fabric and where is it hung?

Mesh fabric has an open weave that lets air pass through, which reduces wind load on large banners. It is used for outdoor banners, fences and sites where a solid banner would catch the wind.

Mesh prints a little softer than a solid fabric, so check the artwork on a sample if fine detail matters.

What is sheer fabric used for?

Sheer fabric is light and see-through, so it suits window graphics, hanging feature panels and displays where light should pass through. The image is visible from both sides, which can work well for a hanging sign.

Because the print is seen from both sides, check the artwork for mirrored text and plan how the banner will be viewed.

How do you choose a fabric for indoor and outdoor use?

Start with where the banner will be used. Indoor displays can use a range of fabrics, while outdoor banners need a fabric that handles wind, sun and rain. Mesh is a common choice for wind, and a heavier polyester suits longer outdoor use.

Tell us the location and how long the banner will stay up, so we can suggest a suitable fabric before you order.

How do you prepare artwork for a fabric banner?

Artwork should be supplied at the finished size, with a clear margin around the edge. Images should be high resolution so they stay sharp at a large size.

Backdropsource provides free artwork help, so the design can be checked before printing. Ask for a proof and confirm the size, colours and any text before approving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which fabric suits a photo backdrop? +
Dye-sublimation polyester suits photo backdrops, where the image is viewed up close and the surface needs a smooth, even finish.
Does blockout fabric let light through? +
No. Blockout fabric stops light passing through, so the wall or lighting behind the banner does not show.
Can a sheer banner be seen from both sides? +
Yes. Sheer fabric is see-through, so the print can be seen from both sides. Check that text reads correctly from each side before approving.
Can I order several banners in the same design? +
Yes. Send the quantity and sizes with your order so each banner can be checked before printing.
How do I store printed fabric between events? +
Keep it clean and dry, and store it flat or rolled in a cool place. Avoid damp storage, as moisture can affect the print.
Do you print fabric for indoor displays? +
Yes. Blockout, dye-sublimation polyester and sheer fabrics all suit indoor displays, depending on whether light, see-through or a sharp image matters most.
